Keeping Your Office Clean - Part 2
Here's another product that I recently tested for cleaning and disinfecting office surfaces - Scott 24 Hour Sanitzing Wipes.
There are multitudes of disinfecting wipes on the market and we carry many of them - Scrubs, Lysol, Clorox, Kimtech, and Sani-Cloth just to name a few. Pretty much all of them advertise that they kill 99.9% of germs and bacteria on non-porous surfaces. The Scott 24 Hour wipes are no different in that respect - they kill 99.9% of cold and flu viruses and a broad spectrum of bacteria, viruses and fungi. They clean, disinfect and sanitize and are intended for both residential and commercial use.
So why single them out?
Three reasons:
1) They have a patent pending formulation that continues to kill the germs and bacteria for 24 hours - even after multiple touches. This is huge - no other brand that I know of can make this claim. After you clean a surface, germs can be reintroduced by the next person who touches or handles the surface again, but Scott 24 Hour Sanitizing Wipes keep working to withstand multiple touches.
2) The main active ingredients are hydrogen peroxide, didecyldimethyl ammonium carbonate and didecyldimethyl ammonium bicarbonate.
Huh?
I searched a couple of chemical databases for information on didecyldimethyl ammonium carbonate and bicarbonate and came up mostly empty. No major toxicity reports, ecotoxicity reports, ground water contaminants or carcinogens. That doesn't mean it isn't harmful at all; there are, of course, some warnings on the package - primarily about what to do if you get it in your eyes - but not anywhere near as many as you usually see on this type of product.
3) One trait that really stuck out to me as I tested them was that they aren't soaking wet. Normally I use Clorox wipes at home and they come out of the canister just dripping wet. And dripping all over my hands. And the surface. And the surface stays so wet that it would take forever to air dry, so I end up wiping it down with a paper towel afterward. Not so with the Scott wipes. They are definitely wet, but it's the right level of wet. They don't drip all over everything and I didn't have to dry my hands after using them. You want the surface to stay wet for a few minutes if you're trying to sanitize and disinfect, but with these I didn't have to go back and dry it with a cloth. They did a great job at cleaning the dirt off my banister and my baseboards and they have a pleasant, light scent. Also, my hands didn't feel dried out after using them.
I liked these a lot. You can use them on computers, keyboards, light switches, door knobs, etc. You can even use them to inhibit or control the growth of mold or mildew. I think I'm going to switch to these at home after I use up my current supply of wipes.
I see no negatives to this item, so I give it 5 paper clips!
