Tech Talk - Finding the Right Filter for Your Device

Over the years, I’ve spoken to many a customer who called to return or exchange the monitor filter they purchased. Usually it was because it was the wrong size and they needed assistance selecting the correct one. Reason number two was that it didn’t do what they wanted it to do.
Finding the right filter for your device needn’t be difficult. There are four basic pieces of information that you need:
The type of screen you have
The measurements
The aspect ratio
The purpose of the filter
Today I’ll walk you through those four things and, when we’re done, you’ll wonder what all the confusion was about!
#1 - What Type of Screen Do You Have?
There are only two choices here - a screen with a raised frame or a flat front edge-to-edge glass screen.
#2 - What are the Measurements of Your Screen?
This one is easy too. You just measure the width, height and diagonal length (bottom left corner to top right corner) of the screen. If your screen has a raised frame, measure only the viewable area - don't include the frame. If you have an edge-to-edge screen, then you measure the entire display.
#3 - What is the Aspect Ratio of Your Screen?
The aspect ratio is the ratio of the display width to the display height. If you don't have anything that tells you this information about your computer, just go to whatismyresolution.com. As soon as you land on the page, it tells you what your resolution is, what your aspect ratio is and whether your screen is a widescreen format. Easy peasy!
#4 - What Do You Want the Filter to Do?
There are basically three choices here:
Antiglare filters - these help reduce glare and reflections on the screen.
Privacy filters - these help protect confidential information by blurring the image when viewed from the side. Only those directly in front of the monitor can see it clearly.
Blackout Privacy filters - these do the same thing as the regular privacy filter except that instead of blurring the image from the side, it blacks it out.
Some privacy filters also offer anti-glare function, but not all of them, so be sure to read all the product details carefully if you want one that does both.
