The Value of Bullet Journaling
A bullet journal takes your typical to-do list to another level. Designed to help you practice mindfulness and remain productive, the journal helps you visually organize what tasks you have and haven’t completed, so you can determine what projects need your attention and in what priority.
WHAT IS A BULLET JOURNAL?
A bullet journal contains four main templates that provide structure: the index, monthly log, future log, and daily log. It helps with productivity, organization, and prioritization of work.
INDEX
The index of the bullet journal is used as a table of contents. It should list each section of the journal and provide page numbers for easy reference.
MONTHLY LOG
The monthly log provides an overview of the assignments you want to complete that month and helps you keep a record of tasks you've already completed. Typical bullet journals will list the days of the month followed by the first letter of the day of the week. At the end of each week, draw a line in order to separate them for additional organization.
FUTURE LOG
The future log is meant to look ahead towards long-term projects you’ve been assigned or want to complete over the course of a few months. It can also be useful when it comes to tracking meetings, birthdays, and important work events.
DAILY LOG
The daily log is the most valuable part of the bullet journal and contains the list of tasks, events, and notes you need to complete that day. It’s also a great way to prioritize tasks. A helpful tip is to use a greater-than sign (>) to mark tasks that still need to be completed in the short term and move those to the monthly log if they aren’t a high priority or to your daily log for the next day if it is a high priority. Migration of projects and assignments within the bullet journal is helpful when it comes to determining the priority of each task and your overall workflow throughout the day and the months ahead.
If you think bullet journaling is right for you, take some time at the start of each week or month to fill in your journal with your assignments and tasks while you’re enjoying a cup of morning coffee or tea.
